Problems Using AOL With Windows Me

If you try to use AOL software with Windows Me, you may encounter a number of errors:

  • When you try to connect to AOL for the first time, you may receive one of the following error messages during step 6, Connecting to America Online:
    • The access company failed to respond properly
    • The access company failed to respond properly (6 A)
    • The access network failed to properly respond
    • The access network failed to properly respond (6 A)
Note that your second dial-up attempt does work.

  • After you use AOL and you attempt to shut down your computer, your computer does not completely shut down. You may need to reset your computer, however, the main power button may not work.

According to AOL, the current workaround for this behavior is to install AOL version 6.

Microsoft has posted an FAQ about using AOL in Windows Millennium Edition.
