Using the Windows 95 Extract Tool (Extract.exe)

By: Arie Slob

Windows 95 is available on CD-ROM or floppy disks, both of which contain compressed cabinet files. These cabinet files contain the actual Windows 95 files. Because this method of compression differs from that used with previous versions of Windows, there is a new utility (Extract.exe) to decompress individual Windows files.

You can use the Extract tool (Extract.exe) to decompress Windows 95 files from the original CD-ROM or disks. This article describes how to use the Extract tool: Microsoft's Knowledge base Article No.: 129605

Note: Microsoft also has a free utility, CabView, part of the Windows 95 Power Toys Set. You can download [209KB] the Power Toys Set from Microsoft, or visit this page for more information.
