Microsoft Unveils Official Name for "Longhorn": Windows Vista

Hello Windows users,
Today Microsoft announced the official name of its next-generation Windows® client operating system, formerly code-named "Longhorn." Video of the name announcement can be seen via the link below.
According to Microsoft, Windows Vista:
- Enables a new level of confidence in your PC and in your ability to get the most out of it.
- Introduces clear ways to organize and use information the way you want to use it.
- Seamlessly connects you to information, people, and devices that help you get the most out of life
Microsoft also announced that Beta 1 of Microsoft Vista, targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by August 3rd 2005.

Microsoft Updates Windows AntiSpyware Beta
This week, Microsoft updated their Windows AntiSpyware, which now carries the build number 1.0.615.
In this update, Microsoft addresses issues pertaining to how Windows AntiSpyware provides information to the user about processes running on a PC, solves an issue regarding the delivery of new anti-spyware signatures for some users and provides new signature updates to help protect against recently identified spyware.
Existing users of the beta (Builds 1.0.501, 1.0.509, 1.0.613, and 1.0.614) will receive a software update that includes the new beta refresh.
Note: The current beta is intended only for English language versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It should not be deployed on non-English versions.
System Requirements
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
- A 300 MHz or faster processor with at least 64 MB of RAM
- Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003
- At least 10 MB of available free space on your hard disk
- Internet access with at least a 28.8 Kbps connection to use SpyNet

Microsoft Windows Security Bulletin Summary for July, 2005
The security update for July 2005 includes includes fixes for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Severity Rating: Critical
Microsoft also published an update for Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Word 2002 or Microsoft Works Suite.

Data Execution Prevention
In Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft introduced Data Execution Prevention (DEP). DEP is a processor feature that prevents execution of code in memory that is marked as data storage. This limits the "attack surface", specifically for the so-called "buffer overrun" vulnerabilities, where an attacker would typically overrun a buffer with code, and then executing this code.
