Windows 95 > Getting Started with Windows 95

Starting in "DOS" mode

By: Arie Slob

To bypass starting Windows 95 at start up without pressing F8, modify the line in the hidden file C:\Msdos.sys. (see How do I show hidden files (such as Msdos.sys) to see how to show hidden files in explorer).

  1. Use Explorer and find Msdos.sys in the root directory
  2. Make a copy of the Msdos.sys file in your Temp directory, or any other directory. (just in case...)
  3. Right-click Msdos.sys and select Properties
  4. Uncheck the Read-only attribute
  5. Under the [Options] section, change:

    BootGUI=1 to BootGUI=0

  6. Save the file
  7. In Explorer right-click on Msdos.sys, select Properties and check the Read-only attribute

For an explanation of the Msdos.sys file, and it's contents, see Microsoft's Knowledge base Article No. 118579
