MORE INFORMATION ================ When you finish the steps in each of the following sections, test to determine if the scripting error still occurs. If the issue is resolved, do not continue to the remaining sections. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next section. To troubleshoot scripting errors in Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01, and 5 for Windows 95 and Windows 98, use the following steps: Download the Latest Scripting Engine ------------------------------------ Download the latest scripting engine from the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/vbscript/scripting.asp IMPORTANT: Windows 95 users must be running Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) or later or be running Internet Explorer 4.0 or later for these files to work properly. Windows 95 users without Internet Explorer 4.0 or OSR2 should install the DCOM update before using these files. To install the DCOM components, visit the DCOM download page at: http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom.asp Users running Internet Explorer 3.02 on international versions of Windows 95 (with or without OSR2) should install DCOM before using these files. Disable Smooth Scrolling ------------------------ To disable the Smooth Scrolling feature in Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and 4.01, use the following steps: 1. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Internet Options on the View menu. 2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Use Smooth Scrolling check box to clear it. 3. Click OK, and then quit Internet Explorer. To disable the Smooth Scrolling feature in Internet Explorer 5.0, use the following steps: 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. 2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Use Smooth Scrolling check box to clear it. 3. Click OK, and then quit Internet Explorer. Disable Show Window Contents While Dragging ------------------------------------------- If you do not have Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95 installed on your computer, skip to the next section. To disable this feature, use the following steps: 1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties. 2. Click the Plus tab, click the Show Window Contents While Dragging check box to clear it, and then click OK. Reduce Number of Colors Windows Is Using ---------------------------------------- To reduce the number of colors Windows is using, use the following steps: 1. Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Settings tab. 2. In the Colors box, click a number of colors that is less than the current setting, click OK, and then click Yes. Reduce Screen Area ------------------ To reduce the screen area, use the following steps: 1. Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Settings tab. 2. In the Screen Area box, move the Screen Area slider to a screen area that is lower than your current screen area setting, click OK, and then click Yes. Disable Hardware Acceleration ----------------------------- To disable hardware acceleration, use the following steps: 1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2. Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics. 3. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, click OK, click Close, and then click Yes. Disable the Active Desktop -------------------------- To disable the Active Desktop, use the following steps: 1. Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Web tab. 2. Click the "View my Active Desktop as a web page" check box to clear it, and then click OK. NOTE: If any of the preceding sections resolved the issue, you may need to update the driver for your display adapter. For information about obtaining an updated driver for your display adapter, contact the manufacturer of your display adapter, or the manufacturer of your computer. If the steps in the preceding sections did not resolve the issue, continue to the next section. Install Current Version of Microsoft DirectX -------------------------------------------- For information about how to install the current version of Microsoft DirectX, see the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/directx Delete Internet Related Folders ------------------------------- To delete Internet related folders, use the following steps. NOTE: Deleting the Favori~1 folder as outlined below will delete all your stored favorite links. The folder is re-created when you restart your computer, but the contents of the folder are not re-created. You may want to copy your favorite links to another folder before using these steps. NOTE: If you have a cookie that stores a password for a particular Web site, copy the contents of the Cookies folder to a new folder instead of deleting the Cookies folder. To do so, type the following commands at a command prompt, pressing ENTER after each command smartdrv.exe md copy c:\windows\cookies\*.* c:\windows\ where is the folder to which you want to copy the contents of the Cookies folder. Note that Smartdrv.exe is not required to delete these files. It is used only to speed the file deletion process. 1. Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press F8, and then choose Command Prompt Only. 2. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command, and pressing Y if you are prompted to confirm deleting a folder. NOTE: These folders are re-created when you restart your computer, but not the contents. All of your saved favorite links in the Favorites folder are deleted when you follow these steps. cd windows deltree tempor~1 deltree cookies deltree history deltree favori~1 3. Restart your computer. 4. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders. 5. In the Named box, type "downloaded program files" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now. 6. Double-click the Downloaded Program Files folder, right-click a file in this folder, and then click Remove. Continue to remove files from this folder in this manner until all files are removed, and then restart your computer. NOTE: If you do not intend to reinstall the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, do not delete the "Win32 Classes" file in the Downloaded Program Files folder.
