Previously I used to show you how to change ("hack") the msnmsgr.exe file using a HEX editor, but every time Microsoft has a new version of Messenger, these instructions would need to change. Then some people would complain that it wouldn't work for their version...
Recently I was made aware of this TechTV tip, which is remarkably simple!
Open Windows Explorer, and browse to your computers Temp folder. (Assuming Windows XP, you'd find the Temp folder at \Documents and Settings\{Username}\Local Settings\Temp where {Username} is the name of the current logged on user.)
Find the file called Links.txt. If you open it, you'll see the URL's MSN Messenger uses to display the ads. Delete all text in this file. Now right-click the file, and select Properties. Near the bottom of the General tab you'll see Attributes. Click to select the Read-only attribute, click Apply & OK to close. (If you don't perform this last step, MSN Messenger will simply copy a new version of the file there, so you're back with ads).
Now when you start Messenger, it will not display any ads!
