Microsoft Releases DirectX 9.0 Public Beta for End-User

DirectX Microsoft released DirectX 9.0 Public Beta for End-User this week.

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.

WARNING!

This is an unsupported Pre-Release version of DirectX 9.0 and may contain bugs or issues that prevent correct operation of DirectX applications. The DirectX 9.0 runtime cannot be uninstalled. Microsoft recommends that this pre-release only be installed on Windows ME or Windows XP systems, and that users create a System Restore point before installing. Failure to create a system restore point may require users to reinstall Windows if a critical issue is discovered. Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, and Windows 2000 do not support the System Restore feature.

For information on creating a restore point, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

The pre-release version expires on March 19, 2003. Users must install a final version of DirectX 9.0 prior to that date to ensure continued proper operation of their system.

So if you REALLY think you need to play with this, you can download the Setup file [260 KB] from the Microsoft site. Supported Languages are: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Czech, Dutch, English (American), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish.
