Microsoft last week announced the release of the final version of Microsoft® DirectX® 8.1. The new version delivers fast performance for DirectX-enabled games and other rich media software. DirectX 8.1 also provides support for the latest generation of 3-D graphics acceleration hardware.
DirectX 8.1 will overwrite any earlier versions. After installation, the DirectX 8.1 run time cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system. So if your current DirectX version is running without problems I suggest that you follow that 'golden' rule: "If it ain't broken - Don't fix it!"....
Also note that this version is only supported for Windows 98, 98SE, Me and 2000. Users of Windows XP do not need to install DirectX 8.1: it is included in the Windows XP operating system.
The latest version of DirectX is available for free download from the DirectX downloads page.
