Microsoft Admits: Programs Run Slower After You Install Windows XP SP-1

By:

Microsoft released a Knowledge Base Article last month, admitting that installing Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) introduces a bug that can cause the system to slow down dramatically.

Apparently the bug affects Windows XP's memory-management subsystem in a way that applications that run frequently and use large amounts of RAM, can take up to 10 times longer to perform identical operations as in pre-SP1 releases.

Microsoft is said to have a fix available, but it is still being evaluated, so not generally available. If you are affected by this problem, you can contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For more information read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 815411.

The fix will be included in the upcomming Windows XP Service Pack 2.
