Microsoft Posts Windows XP Administration Tools Pack Beta 3 for Download

By:

When Windows XP shipped last October, many IT professionals and administrators where unpleasantly surprised by the omission of an important tool of their trade: the Administrative Tools Pack. With this set of tools, it is possible to administer a server from your desktop. For example the administrator could be running Windows 2000 Professional, and with the help of several tools, could administer Windows 2000 Server right from his desktop.

Both Windows NT and Windows 2000 shipped with these tools on the production CD-ROM; but not Windows XP. And the Windows 2000 version doesn't work with Windows XP.

Untill now the answer given to questions in technical support groups has been to use the Adminpack tools shipping with the beta version of .NET server. But not everybody has access to the beta.

Last week, Microsoft released .NET beta 3 to testers, and it has also made the Adminpack available for (free) download to everyone. According to Microsoft a final version will be available by the end of the year.

System Requirements

Adminpak.msi requirements:

  • Windows XP Professional (will not install on Windows 2000)
  • 30MB of free disk space

Adminpak Download [10.65MB]
