Undock Windows Vista's Quick Launch Toolbar

By: Arie Slob

Unlike previous Windows versions you can't just grab Windows Vista's Quick Launch Toolbar and place it anywhere you want. There are lots of users who are used to having the Windows Quick Launch Toolbar at the side of their screen.

To achieve this in Vista, we have to use the following work-around:

  1. Create a new folder on the Windows desktop
  2. Drag this folder to the edge of your desktop & release it. It should now turn into a toolbar (Figure)
  3. Right-click this new toolbar & select Toolbars > Quick Launch
  4. Right-click this new toolbar again and uncheck Toolbars > New Folder

You can now remove the Quick Launch toolbar from the Windows Taskbar by right-clicking the Taskbar and un-checking Toolbars > Quick Launch.

You can also set the new Quick Launch bar to be Always on Top and/or to Auto Hide. These options can be set by right-clicking the new Quick Launch bar.
