Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview

by Arie Slob

Hello Windows users,

Internet Explorer 7

Earlier this week, Microsoft finally ended the long wait for a public beta of Internet Explorer 7, releasing a "preview" version to the general public for testing (although officially this preview is targeted to Web developers, tech enthusiasts, and early adopters).

You should note that this version is only intended for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (the final browser will also be available for Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and Windows Server 2003).

Internet Explorer development had been stagnant for years. Finally, when Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP came around, Microsoft made some much needed improvements to their browser. It was high time too: Because of Microsoft's strategy to integrate Internet Explorer deeply into the operating system, and Internet Explorer's weak security, the browser had become the most obvious attack vector for malware & spyware.

Now it looks like Microsoft will up the ante of Internet Explorer, and not only catch up to other browsers by adding features such as tabbed browsing, but actually surpass many by adding new features such as a phishing filter, International Domain Name (IDN) spoofing protection and other security enhancements.

You can get more information on Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 Web site, where you also find a download link. Here's a direct link [11.2 MB] to the download file on the Microsoft site.

WARNING! All the usual warnings about "beta" software apply (including: Internet Explorer 7 should not be used on production systems). Also, while most of the functionality is in place, the user experience is not done.

User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Microsoft updated their User Profile Hive Cleanup Service, a service to help with slow log off and unreconciled profile caused by profile hive unload problems.

Symptoms of these problems include events in the application event log with source Userenv and event id 1000 where the message text indicates a profile unload problem and the error is "Access is denied" or event id 1517 or 1524.

The service is set to automatically start when the computer boots so you will not need to start it manually.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows NT; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP
