Microsoft Releases Windows 2000 Update Rollup 1

Hello Windows users,
 A bit later than originally expected, but last Tuesday Microsoft released the final major update to Windows 2000, named Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4. The update consists of previously released recommended, critical and security updates for Windows 2000 between the release of Windows 2000 SP4 and April 30, 2005. April 30, 2005 is the date when the contents for Update Rollup 1 were locked down for final testing by Microsoft, external beta testing sites, and customer sites.
According to Microsoft Service Pack 4 (SP4) is the final Service Pack for Windows 2000. SP4 is a prerequisite for deploying the Update Rollup.
The Update Rollup 1 contains additional enhancements that increase system security, reliability, and support the current generation of PC hardware. In some cases, the individual binary files released in previous individual security updates may have been updated via individual hotfixes to address minor compatibility issues introduced in those prior security updates that affected individual customers. The latest versions of those files are included in the Update Rollup, so even if you have all the current patches for Windows 2000 installed, you should still install the Update Rollup 1.
Windows 2000 systems with SP4 and the Update Rollup will be considered "up-to-date" from a life-cycle policy perspective until the end of life (EOL) date of Windows 2000. The EOL date will be no sooner than January 1, 2010.

... Ends Mainstream Support For Windows 2000
As is documented on their Product Lifecycle Dates Web site, at the end of June, Microsoft retired mainstream support for the five year old Windows 2000 OS.
The end of mainstream support means that Microsoft will no longer accept requests for warranty support, add new features, or make design changes to Windows 2000. But Microsoft have pledged Extended Support through June 2010, which means that critical security fixes will still be made available for the OS.
In many companies Windows 2000 Professional is still widely in use, but an analyst at the Butler Group believes that many firms where already planning to upgrade, since the retirement of Windows 2000 mainstream support has always been planned & documented by Microsoft.
