Microsoft Will Ship Stripped-Down Longhorn in 2006

Hello Windows users,
 At the end of August, Microsoft announced a change in its plans for the next major Windows client release, when it announced that the company will ship Longhorn in 2006.
In order to meet this deadline, some things have to give way, the most important being that the new Windows storage subsystem (codenamed WinFS), will not be shipping in the initial Longhorn release.
According to Jim Allchin, Microsoft Group Vice President, Platforms Division, the change in plans for WinFS is driven by customer feedback, which asked for WinFS to be available not only on the client, but also on the server. And Longhorn server has a release target for 2007, so presumably we will see WinFS make its way into the client at that time.
Another change is that both "Avalon" (Longhorns presentation subsystem) and "Indigo" (Longhorns communication subsystem) will ship separately for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (no further details on how & when have been released).
An analyst for Gartner claimed different reasons for a 2006 release for Longhorn: "Microsoft's earlier assertions that Longhorn was not a date-driven release no longer seem accurate. Gartner believes that Microsoft wishes to release a new version of Windows by year-end 2006 to shore up revenue and appease customers that paid for Software Assurance on the client OS under Enterprise, Open or Select agreements."
Other reports are suggesting that the Longhorn development may be further delayed, as the decision has been made to scrap the current code base, and build Longhorn from scratch using the Windows XP SP2 code base (Longhorn was based on the Windows Server 2003 code base).
