This is the last issue of the Windows-Help.NET Newsletter for this year. Most of you will celebrate the comming holiday, so from myself and the entire InfiniSource team I want to wish you happy Holidays and all the best for 2004!

Microsoft's Holiday Advice

In preparation for the holiday season, Microsoft is offering some advice to tell (new users) on how to secure their new PC "right out of the box". Since user action is required, one could argue that Windows XP (which will be the Operating System pre-installed on most new PC's) does not protect users right out of the box.

According to Microsoft, users should first enable the Windows XP firewall using these steps:

1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel
2. Click the Network and Internet Connections icon
3. Click the Network Connections icon
4. Right-click on the connection you plan to use and select Properties
5. In the resulting menu, select the Advanced tab
6. Check the box that reads Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet.

Next Microsoft advises new users that once they are connected to the Internet, they update their Anti-Virus software (assuming that AV software was included in their purchase!), and visit WindowsUpdate to make sure that all the latest patches are installed (as the images used by computer manufacturers to pre-install the OS are not up-to-date on most occasions).

Windows XP's firewall will be switched on by default when Microsoft releases the next update for Windows XP, Service Pack 2, currently in beta testing.

Microsoft Releases Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update

Microsoft released an update to Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. The update enhances the junk e-mail filter in Outlook 2003 to help provide a higher level of protection against junk e-mail.

The update, which is optional, can be downloaded from the Microsoft download [1 MB] Web site.

Microsoft Offers Apologies For Swastika Symbols In Office 2003 Font

Last week, Microsoft Senior Vice President Steven Sinofsky published an Open Letter in which the company apologized for the fact that "due to an unintentional oversight" Microsoft failed to identify the presence of two swastikas in the Bookshelf Symbol 7 font.

Microsoft has released a utility for download that removes the font. You can download the English [131 KB] version directly, or go to the Microsoft download site to select your language.
