Microsoft Starts 2003 With Mulitple Releases

by Arie Slob

Hello Windows users,

First off all let me wish everyone a Happy New Year! I hope that 2003 will bring everything you expect from it!

Microsoft has a lot riding on 2003. It has planned many releases, including a new Office version, a new Exchange server version, a new SQL server as well as several technologies based on .NET. This is how Microsoft started the year:

Plus! Digital Media Edition

Announced January 7, Microsoft® Plus! Digital Media Edition (DME) for Windows® XP, the ultimate photo, music and movie enhancement pack for Windows XP. Plus! Digital Media Edition provides a range of new experiences for anyone who enjoys digital photography, digital music and video.

Plus! DME is the first Microsoft retail product offered for download via the Web; it is available for download and purchase (USA only for now) by visiting the Microsoft Plus! Web site.

Windows Media Player 9 Series

On the same day Microsoft announced the immediate availability of Windows Media® 9 Series, the next-generation digital media platform. Windows Media 9 Series features innovations such as high-definition video at up to six times the resolution of DVD, the first 5.1-channel surround sound streaming audio, and a faster, more-television like experience with media on the Web. Windows Media 9 Series provides dramatically improved media playback for all users and offers the most comprehensive platform features for hardware and software manufacturers, enabling them to build their own unique products and services.

Movie Maker 2 for Windows XP

Released on the 8th this month, Movie Maker 2 for Windows XP, a new and completely redesigned video editing application. According to Microsoft, the new Windows Movie Maker 2 offers dramatic improvements for Windows XP customers to remove the complexity and confusion from home video editing. Windows Movie Maker 2 offers powerful new features with over 130 new kinds of video effects, titles and transitions to help even novice PC users create their own home movies with a professional touch.

I'm not a real "home movie buff", but I played around a little with it, and I'm quite impressed with this one! It will give Apple's iMovie a run for its money!

Microsoft Releases Application Compatibility Analyzer Beta 2

In the last week of December, Microsoft released Beta 2 of the Application Compatibility Analyzer. The Microsoft Application Compatibility Analyzer gathers application inventory information from network computers and compiles this data into reports showing the application compatibility status by computer, department, or application. The tool solves many problems encountered during the early phases of software deployment.

Microsoft Releases DirectX 9.0

Just before Christmas, Microsoft released DirectX 9.0. Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX 9.0 includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.

Just a small tip: Don't fix it, if it ain't broken! In other words, if you aren't running the latest game which requires DX9, just forget about it. There isn't much to be gained over DX8... YMMV

Microsoft Server: Who am I?

This week, Microsoft announced that the successor to Windows 2000 Server would now be called Windows Server 2003. This makes it the fourth name change so far. Originally Microsoft planned to call the Windows 2000 Server replacement Windows Server 2002, but it was alleged that group VP Jim Allchin disliked that name, and it was later changed to Windows
.NET Server. Later in 2002, Microsoft changed the name to Windows
.NET Server 2003.

Apparently, Microsoft is rethinking its .NET naming strategy. So far the Redmond Company has had trouble explaining what .NET exactly is. Sources now say that Microsoft is planning a ".NET Connected" logo, to indicate a products ability to connect systems, devices & applications.
