Yet Another Patch for Internet Explorer

Hello Windows users,
 After releasing cumulative patches for Internet Explorer on February 11 and March 28, Microsoft released yet another cumulative patch for Internet Explorer on May 15th.
This new patch is to fix six vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5 and 6, the most serious of which could allow code of attacker's choice to run. The patch also introduces a behavior change to the Restricted Sites zone. Specifically, it disables frames in the Restricted Sites zone. Since the Outlook Express 6.0, Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000 with the Outlook Email Security Update and Outlook 2002 all read email in the Restricted Sites zone by default, this enhancement means that those products now effectively disable frames in HTML email by default. This new behavior makes it impossible for an HTML email to automatically open a new window or to launch the download of an executable.

The patch is available in 26 local languages, and ranges in size from 1.89MB for the Internet Explorer 5.01 version to 2.47MB for the Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP1) version.
If you are running any other version of Internet Explorer you should seriously consider upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2, Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2, or Internet Explorer 6
Microsoft Loses Appeal to Shut Down Lindows.com
This week Microsoft lost the Motion for Reconsideration of Preliminary Injunction Order it had logged after its first attempt to shutdown Lindows.com, and stop it from advertising its product, as reported in a previous Newsletter.
The judge again pointed out flaws in Microsoft's defense that it holds a trademark on "Windows" saying: "Microsoft's reasoning is flawed because it ignores the Seventh Circuit's case law holding that when a composite term is generic and is made up of an adjective (or other descriptive word) that classifies a noun, the adjective itself can also be a generic term. Microsoft's argument also ignores its own analysis of the Defendant's evidence, which shows repeated references to the composite terms "window manager," "windowing environment," "windows programs" and several others." Another part of the ruling states: "Through its own use of the evidence, Microsoft essentially admits that these terms refer to the genus of computer software products that have windowing capability."
So the conclusion came as little surprise: "...the evidence shows that the consuming public used the terms "windows," "window" and "windowing" to refer to a type of graphical user interface or other software program, including operating systems, in which overlapping windows are the predominant visual feature. As a result, the Court did not err in either its legal or factual analysis when it denied Microsoft's motion for a preliminary injunction. The motion for Reconsideration is DENIED"
