Microsoft recently admitted that Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows XP would be delivered several months later than originally planned, and that they are now working towards delivering SP1 in the second half of this year.
Yet another reason for the delay is that Microsoft wants to include the changes required by the consent decree with the DOJ and the nine states. Although not yet finalized, these may require Microsoft to give competitors access to the Windows desktop, and let Windows users remove Microsoft applications they choose to replace (such as Internet Explorer).
Beta testing is expected to start this spring; a possible release date mentioned is September 2002.
