Windows 2000 SP3 Release Rumors

by Arie Slob

Hello Windows users,

Windows 2000 SP3 Close Well, rumors are flowing fast about Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3)! Early indications where that somewhere between July 17 and 24 Microsoft would release SP3 to manufacturing (RTM). But on July 8th Paul Thurrott published a story, which claimed that Microsoft has delayed SP3 because of bugs in the Microsoft Installer (MSI) 2.0 code, which the company had planned to bundle with the update.

I haven't been able to get any confirmation of this story, but it does sound a bit strange. Microsoft Installer 2.0 has been out since 25 September 2001, so you should think that if there where serious bugs, they would have been fixed by now....

Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see. It has now been over 14 months since Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 was released, so Microsoft isn't making any friends with System Administrators struggling with hundreds of updates to SP2.

In fact, if you search the Microsoft site for PreSP4Fix, you get already a list of 125 fixes released after SP3 was "frozen" (anything with a pre-SP4 status, by definition, is not included in SP3). So let's hope that they finally get SP3 out! (Or are they hoping people get so desperate that they upgrade to Windows XP?????)
