Microsoft Releases Software to Manufacturing

by Arie Slob

Hello Windows users,

This week, at the NetWorld+Interop 2002 show, Microsoft announced the release to manufacturing of several software products.

Project 2002 Microsoft has done an extensive update and expanded the Microsoft Project 2002 product family, marking it as Microsoft's entry into the enterprise project and resource management marketplace. The Microsoft Project 2002 product family now includes a separate Microsoft .NET Enterprise Server product that incorporates increased collaboration functionality, portfolio and resource management capabilities, and enterprise-level performance. It will be available to the public in June according to Microsoft.

"We're excited to report that Microsoft Project 2002 code is now final, and we are set to deliver a complete project and resource management solution for our enterprise customers," said Chris Capossela, general manager of the Microsoft Project business unit at Microsoft. "We believe that Microsoft Project 2002 will enable organizations to make project management a critical business application throughout their enterprise."

Pricing and Availability

Estimated retail pricing* will be $599 for Microsoft Project Standard 2002; $999 for Microsoft Project Professional 2002; and $1,499 for Microsoft Project Server 2002, which includes five Microsoft Project Server Client Access Licenses. Additional Microsoft Project Server Client Access Licenses will be $179 each.

Microsoft Services for UNIX 3.0Services for UNIX (SFU 3.0) is being offered to meet the growing demand of UNIX customers wanting to take advantage of Microsoft® Windows® 2000. SFU 3.0 incorporates new tools for migration to Windows 2000 as well as new features for tighter platform integration in mixed environments.

"We know customers that have existing UNIX investments which are at the end of their life cycle or that want to move off UNIX to lower IT costs," said S. Somasegar, corporate vice president of the Windows Engineering Services and Solutions Division at Microsoft. "Services for UNIX 3.0 helps customers address these concerns by providing seamless interoperability between UNIX and Windows for effective coexistence in a heterogeneous network environment, as well as a powerful set of tools for smooth migration to Windows 2000."

The most significant enhancement of SFU 3.0 over previous versions is the integration of the Interix subsystem technology. Interix provides a full UNIX environment that runs on the Windows kernel, giving organizations a universal platform to run both Windows and UNIX applications on a single system. Also included in the new product are more than 300 UNIX utilities and the most popular UNIX shells for UNIX command line administration on Windows. Whether the goal is for long-term integration or short-term coexistence, with this enhancement, customers are able to reduce system costs and development time, and leverage existing employee skill sets.

Pricing and Availability

SFU 3.0 is scheduled to be available in standard Microsoft distribution channels by the end of the second quarter of 2002, with a suggested retail price of $99 (USD). More information can be found at the Services for UNIX Home Web site.

DU Meter

"I just had to tell you about DU Meter, this great little utility that monitors my new DSL connection 24/7. A quick glance always tells me if a download is finished, stuck, or still in progress, and if my connection is working right. My desktop just wouldn't be the same without it!"

Buffer Overflow in Macromedia's Flash Player 6.0 ActiveX Control

A buffer overflow condition exists in Macromedia's Flash Player 6.0 ActiveX Control. An attacker can use this vulnerability to execute code through email, a Web site, or any other way that Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) uses to display HTML.

More information can be found in eEye's Security bulletin.

Macromedia released a new Flash ocx to eliminate these problems.
Windows XP Tip: Add "Copy to Folder" and "Move to Folder" to Explorer Context Menu

The Windows 95 PowerToys has a similar function, the "Send to Folder" option. You can add "Copy to Folder" and "Move to Folder" to the Explorer context menu, so when you right-click a file or folder in Explorer, you have the option to Copy or Move it to another folder.
