Microsoft Sends Windows NT in Retirement
by Arie Slob
Hello Windows users,
Microsoft has started a phased retirement of Windows NT® Server 4.0. NT 4 started life in the marketplace in September 1996. After five years on the market—and with the increasing adoption of its successor, Windows® 2000 Server family, the end of NT 4 draws ever closer.
As announced in September 2001, and effective October 1, 2001, Windows NT Server 4.0 (Standard or Enterprise Edition) is no longer available through Microsoft Volume Licensing programs. This product line will continue to be phased out through July 1, 2003. Last July 1st singled the end of Windows NT Server 4.0 (Standard and Enterprise Edition) Full Packaged Product (FPP). It will no longer be available in the reselling channel. Also on this date NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition stopped being offered through the Direct OEM channel. Next year (July 1, 2003) will see NT Server 4.0 (Standard) no longer be offered through the System Builder channel.
Product support will also be phased out:
- From January 1, 2003, customers requesting non-security QFEs will be charged a fee. Security updates will be provided free of charge to all customers during this time period.
- From January 1, 2004, Pay-per-incident and Premier support will no longer be available. The availability of security updates for NT 4.0 after this period has not been established.
- Online support will no longer be available from January 1, 2005 (but this date isn't fixed yet).
Windows NT 4.0 Server has been a successful product for Microsoft, and is being (or has been) replaced by Windows 2000 Server in many companies.

"I travel a great deal and always have to synchronize my laptop with my office desktop. Synchromagic gets the job quickly and efficiently in about 1/10th the time it used to take me and I never forget any files! And when I return to the office synching back to my desktop is a no brainer. I love this software!"
