Microsoft: one month development stop

by Arie Slob

Hello Windows users,

Microsoft According to a brief article in the Government Computer News (GCN), an IT publication aimed at federal, state and local governments in the U.S, Microsoft, on February 1st, announced a one month development stop on new coding, in order to concentrate on fixing bugs in existing software, one of the first visible signs of Microsoft's new "Trustworthy Computing Initiative", launched a few weeks earlier with an e-mail from Bill Gates.

The article quotes Richard Purcell, head of Microsoft's corporate privacy office as saying that Microsoft chairman Bill Gates "is really annoyed by the incredible pain we put everyone through in computing." (how does that sound?)

There is little more information to be found on this subject, but there have been 3 new security bulletins posted by Microsoft so far this month: one dealing with a flaw in Microsoft Office v. X for Mac, a second dealing with less secure default settings in Exchange Server 2000, and a third dealing with a buffer overflow in Windows 2000 Telnet service and Telnet Daemon in Interix 2.2.

MSN Messenger Privacy Flaw

Messenger Richard Antony Burton published an example of the latest privacy flaw to hit MSN Messenger, one that will list your name & contacts from Messenger. You can access the page here. He also listed a workaround, which basically is one of the recommendations I gave in an article I published back in October 2000 under the title "How to surf the Internet more safely with Internet Explorer"....

"I just installed TweakMASTER... the difference is AMAZING. I use DSL as well as modem (just to see the difference with both) I love THIS, No problems what so ever. AOL surfing is a lot more fun now. I feel like I got a whole new computer. I have installed it on 2 systems so far and I am tickled pink. I have two more computers to install it on. I am using AOL 5.0. Thank you for allowing me to test this, I think I fell in love with it."
