 Microsoft Office XP Review

by Arie Slob

Hello Windows users,

Office XP As you probably know, Microsoft Office XP will be available for purchase on May 31st. I decided to take a look at Office XP, and installed Microsoft Office XP Professional Corporate Preview Beta.

Office is such a massive collection of applications, and the individual applications have such a huge number of features, it is nearly impossible to write a complete review about the product, without spending some serious time with it.

Since the focus of Windows-Help.NET is on Microsoft's operating systems, I decided just to touch on a limited number of Office features in my review.

Microsoft is touting Office XP as a mayor release; with advancements to simplify the way people work, introduce customers to .NET services, implement new anti-piracy measures, and provide benefits to individuals and teams, as well as organizations of all sizes.

According to Microsoft they talked to customers and took sales-force feedback into account as primary information sources during Office XP's development.

What Microsoft found (they say) is that users spend a lot of time in tweaking and formatting content, and also that combining content from multiple Office applications, is increasingly becoming a greater part of users work.

The space in this Newsletter is to limited to reproduce the review, so if you are interested, I urge you to read my review on the Windows-Help.NET Web site.

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at Office XP's intuitive design. I had no plans initially to upgrade my Office 2000 suite, but now I'm not so sure. If you are a casual Office user, you might find that Office XP doesn't offer you all that much, but I would urge every Office user to take a serious look at Office XP.

WebDAV Service Provider Can Allow Scripts to Levy Requests as User

Microsoft has released a patch that eliminates a security vulnerability in Microsoft Data Access Component Internet Publishing Provider. This vulnerability could enable an attacker to use a Web-based script to levy WebDAV requests on the user's behalf.

Affected Software Versions

  • Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Me
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows 2000

Note: The fix for this issue will be included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Windows XP. In addition, any other products that ship the Microsoft Data Access Component Internet Publishing Provider will ship a corrected version in their next version or service pack.

DU Meter "I just had to tell you about DU Meter, this great little utility that monitors my new DSL connection 24/7. A quick glance always tells me if a download is finished, stuck, or still in progress, and if my connection is working right. My desktop just wouldn't be the same without it!"
