Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2

Hello Windows users,
Microsoft made Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 available for download in the usual quiet manner around August 2nd, promising improved support for DHTML and CSS and to fix a number of bugs.
Don't be misguided by the "Service Pack" moniker, the download will be for the whole package (as usual), and amounts to around 29MB when you choose the "Download Only" option.
I would only suggest this Service Pack for users of Internet Explorer 5.5. If you are running Internet Explorer 5.01 (see How to Determine Which Version of Internet Explorer Is Installed), I suggest you make sure that you have Service Pack 2 from IE 5.01 installed.
Microsoft published a list of "issues" fixed by IE 5.5 SP2. You can find more information on SP2, and a download link on Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web site.
Microsoft Updates Internet Explorer 6 Preview
Microsoft has updated the Internet Explorer 6 Public Preview. I haven't downloaded this latest update, as it seems likely that the final build of Internet Explorer 6 will be ready in just a few weeks max. There are rumors circulating on the Internet suggesting an August 15 release, but the only comment coming from Microsoft about that date is that it will post IE6 for download on its servers before the Windows XP release date (Oct. 25).
If you are interested in the Internet Explorer 6 Preview, you can download your copy from the Microsoft Internet Explorer Web site.
Code Red II worm going around
Last week I wrote about the Code Red virus, and how it infects Web servers running Microsoft's Internet Information Server. That same weekend a new variant appeared. This time it also leaves a "backdoor" behind in the infected machine. Also, a lot of broadband users are seeing suspicious activity on their modem lights. This is because this new variant usually looks for IP addresses in the same class network, instead of random IP addresses as the original Code Red did. AT&T has already closed access to all its customers pn port 80 (http service), leaving anyone running a Web server without presence on the Internet. Running a Web server from your AT&T cable connection isn't permitted under the use policy, but commercial customers are not affected. Windows XP: On Selected Computers in September?
Reports are appearing on the Internet suggesting that Microsoft will allow certain OEM's (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to start shipping PC's with Windows XP pre-installed around one month before the official release date (of Oct. 25).
