 Best Whishes!

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

First of all, I'd like to extend my Best Wishes to you and your family for this new year, the true start of the new millennium!

As always, I will try to provide you with information on the Windows platform this year, and there should be plenty! As you probably know, Microsoft is beta testing the successor to the complete Windows line (Windows 9x / Me / 2000). Currently this product is called "Whistler" (read my review of the Beta 1 if you didn't already). As it currently stands, "Whistler" is expected to be available in the second half of 2001. Also being tested is the second Service Pack for Windows 2000. There's no date being mentioned for its release, but it will probably be within the next 2 or 3 months.

Happy Computing!

Intel Launches Faster Celeron Processor

Intel this week launched a new Celeron™ 800MHz processor. It is the first Intel desktop value PC processor to include a 100MHz system bus, a technology that offers a wider communications path between the processor and the rest of the system, resulting in faster overall system performance. When compared with the current 766MHz Celeron, which sports a 66MHz system bus, the performance improvement is up to 20 percent, according to Intel officials.

"Intel is updating the hardware ingredients of value PCs to bring more performance and capabilities to consumers in 2001," said Jeff McCrea, director, Intel Desktop Platform Marketing. "These new technologies are expected to proliferate quickly, enabling a wide variety of system designs for the New Year."

In 1,000-unit quantities, the Intel Celeron 800MHz processor costs $170. The first systems based upon this new processor are expected at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
