Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 6

Microsoft last week released the final version of Internet Explorer 6.

Web Privacy Tools
Internet Explorer 6 gives you tools to protect your privacy and allows you to control the personal information Web sites collect about you. These tools support the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P), a technology under development by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Further implementation information on the Internet Explorer 6 privacy features is available on the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN®) and is also available at http://www.w3c.org/p3p/.
The Privacy functionality in Internet Explorer 6 provides you with the ability to automatically filter cookies based on whether sites collect your personal information. When actions are taken by Internet Explorer 6 to restrict cookies via the automatic filtering, you are notified via the privacy icon on the status bar. If you experience problems in using a particular web site, or receive errors related to cookies, it may be because the site makes use of third party cookies, without disclosing P3P privacy information. In this case, you may want to first review the Web site's privacy practices and then consider adding the site as 'Allow' in your list of Web sites. Lastly, you can adjust your Internet Explorer Privacy settings to Accept all Cookies to ensure compatibility. Below are steps to accomplish that:
- In Internet Explorer, select on Tools > Internet Options
- Select the Privacy tab
- Adjust the Privacy Preferences slider down to Accept all Cookies
- Press OK
You can also override cookie handling for individual Web sites:
- In Internet Explorer, select on Tools > Internet Options
- Select the Privacy tab
- Click the Edit button under the Web Sites heading
- Type the full address (including the http:// part) in the Address of Web site bar
- Click Block or Allow depending on your choice for this Web site
- When done, press OK
Image Toolbar
The Image Toolbar feature shows itself when you hover your cursor over an image on a Web page (Figure). It allows you quick access to some basic features, such as save, print, and e-mail pictures. The Image Toolbar also gives you instant access to your My Pictures folder (This functionality can be disabled by Web authors).
Media Bar
The Media Bar (Figure) provides a simple user interface for locating and playing media within Internet Explorer. The Media Bar provides simple controls that allow you to play music, video, or mixed media files without opening a separate window. It also gives you direct access to (audio) volume control, choose files or tracks, and access to the different media (CD's or Internet radio stations), either locally on your computer or on/through the WindowsMedia.com Web site.
Outlook Express 6.0
Outlook Express 6.0 includes new security features that can help protect your computer from harmful e-mail and blocks potentially harmful attachments. (Figure). Outlook Express is now set by default to use the Restricted sites zone, something that I suggested over a year ago. There is also another options not selected by default that could be useful:

Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus
To be honest, I think this should have been selected by default, as recent worms & viruses have proven time and again that people open any attachment they get, even .exe files.
Download
You can Download (497KB) the setup file from the Microsoft server. Several people keep asking me how to download a full version. Well this is quite simple: Just download the setup file, and when you run it, click the Advanced button. Now you can choose to download all the files. If however you are running Windows 2000 or XP, you need to follow the steps in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q257249.
You can also order IE 6 on CD (U.S. and Canada Only). To get started go to the Internet Explorer Web site. The CD that Microsoft is offering includes the complete package for Internet Explorer 6, and costs U.S. $10 plus tax (CDN $15 plus tax).
