Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,
As part of the promotion of the new operating system, Microsoft is holding a Windows Me Sweepstakes in which it will give away 50 special edition copies of the operating system every day. Each copy will be autographed by Bill Gates himself. The Grand Prize winner receives a VIP trip to visit the "Digital Home of the Future" at Microsoft and a digital camera to capture their visit!
You can find the Windows Me Sweepstakes Web site here: http://www.winmesweeps.com/.
The contest will end on August 30th, and is open only to legal residents of the United States (void in US territories) and Canada (void in Quebec), who are 18 years or older at time of entry.
Windows 2000 SP1
After missing its initial June release date, the company promised that it was "on track" to deliver the first Service Pack for Windows 2000, SP1, "this summer".
In fact, two sources at Microsoft told us that SP1 was due on July 24, but the product never showed. Microsoft is suggesting a release on July 31.
Last Thursday, Microsoft send out SP1 to Microsoft Premiere Customers as a "limited" release before the official launch. The service pack, named sp1network.exe, is 85MB in size and contains files dated July 21.
We did a small review of Windows 2000 SP1 recently.
Microsoft releases Windows 2000 Datacenter Server RC1
Microsoft last week released a pre-release version of Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, Release Candidate 1 (RC1).
Datacenter includes all the features found in Windows 2000 Advanced Server and has high-end scalability features such as support for 64GB of memory and support for up to 32 processors, Winsock Direct, as well as availability and reliability features such as two- and four-node clustering, process control and network load balancing. Windows 2000 Datacenter Server will only be available through qualified systems manufacturers as part of the Windows Datacenter Program.
Microsoft originally planned to release Datacenter within 60 days of the other Windows 2000 products, but it's been delayed twice since then. It is now expected to be in the hands of customers by September.
