Windows Me for free?
OK, so you decided to stick with Windows 95/98 for now. You don't want to spend any more $$$ on your PC to upgrade Windows? Well, here's a nice surprise: you can have nearly all updates found in Windows Me for free!
First there is Windows Media Player 7. Microsoft released this new player last July, and it's available for free download from the Windows Media Web site.
Internet Explorer 5.5 is another key component of Windows Me. IE5.5 has been available for free download from Microsoft since July. You can start with downloading the setup [505KB] program.
Another component you can get for free is the MSN Messenger Service. Use it to stay in contact with friends, family, and co-workers. You'll need a free Passport to log in, but if you have a Hotmail account you're all set.
Another bonus added in Windows Me is Windows Movie Maker, the video editing software. It took me some travels on the Web, but I have located a free alternative ABCVideoRoll. It's rated **** (4-stars) by ZDNet, and you can download a copy here [2.36MB]. You also need QuickTime 4.1, and DirectX (minimum DX 6.0) for video capture.
Another great feature of Windows Me is it's ability to restore itself after a crash, or after you have installed software that's not compatible. There is no free alternative, however Adaptec produces GoBack. This program, which retails for $69.95, is available for a preview from the Adaptec Web site.
While these products won't give you all improvements of Windows Me, you get the most noticeable ones! For more information on Windows Me, visit our Windows Me page.
