 Windows 2000 Launched

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

This week saw the launch of the long awaited - and often delayed - successor to Windows NT: Windows 2000. If you missed it, you can check out the launch party, with the Keynote Address from the Windows 2000 Conference & Expo in San Francisco, delivered Feb. 17, 2000. See the address by Bill Gates, Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect, with special guests Patrick Stewart and Carlos Santana, showcasing new Windows 2000 features and highlighting customer solutions.

If you didn't hear it here before, this is not your next Windows upgrade. If you are currently running Windows 9.x you might notice that there is an upgrade option to Windows 2000, but you should realize that Windows 2000 is geared for business use, not consumer use.

Microsoft is working on the next "consumer" version of Windows, called Windows ME (Millennium Edition), an official release date isn't set yet, but a July release seems possible.

Intel ups AMD in the Gigahertz Wars

Last week AMD demonstrated a 1.1GHz(1100 MHz) version of the Athlon processor, this week at the Intel Developer Forum in Palm Springs, Intel demonstrated a chip running at 1.5GHz. The chip, code named Willamette, is set for release in the second half of this year. Intel also demonstrated the first production-level Pentium® III processor-based systems that run at 1GHz, to be introduced in limited quantities shortly.

These developments are good news for consumers. If faster processors get introduced at a faster pace, it means that all existing processors will drop in price, so faster systems will be available at reduced prices.
