Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,
Two weeks ago I reported that Microsoft will offer Windows Millennium Edition (Me) for a special upgrade price of $59.95 for Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition customers who wish to upgrade their system.
This special upgrade is now available for pre-order from Microsoft for $59.95. But you can also pre-order at Amazon.com, for the price of $49.99.
Both these offers are available only for the USA. You should contact your local Microsoft subsidiary for information on the availability of this Windows Me offer in your country.
Windows 95 users are excluded from this special offer. You can pre-order the Microsoft Windows Millennium Upgrade for $89.99 at Amazon.com
Microsoft working to port its applications to Linux
According to an article this week by Paul Thurrott, Microsoft is working closely with a company called Mainsoft to port its Windows applications to open source operating system Linux and, possibly, other versions of UNIX. The complicated undertaking, which has been a work in progress for over a year, requires the companies to map native Win32 API calls to the Linux equivalents so that Windows applications will run normally in that environment.
Press releases by Mainsoft only confirm that the company is involved to port Internet Explorer technologies to UNIX, and to bring Windows Media Player 6.3 to Solaris. However, I'd say were there's smoke, there are bound to be flames, although Microsoft is denying the rumors.
