 Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 5.5

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

Microsoft has finally released the long-awaited Internet Explorer 5.5, more than a month after it was ready for shipping.

You can start by downloading the setup [505KB] file.

Internet Explorer 5.5

What's New

You won't notice many new features in IE 5.5. The only real addition from a user point of view is the Print Preview feature. Here's a list with the most important additions:

  • Enhanced HTML component (HTC) model
  • More control over user interface components, such as scroll bars, frames, and pop-up windows and menus
  • Improved rendering and layout interfaces for binary behaviors
  • More cascading style sheet (CSS) styles, such as the first-letter and first-line pseudo-elements
  • Vertical text, made possible by using the writingMode property
  • Enhanced HTML+TIME support
  • Print Preview
  • New HTML Editing features

For more information check our Web site.

There are some early indications that there may be some problems with the mshtml.dll file in Internet Explorer 5.5, with quite a number of people reporting crashes. For more information about this, join us on the Windows-Help.NET Support BBS

Windows Update Corporate Web site Preview

Microsoft has launched a new "Corporate" Windows Update Web site. The reference to "Corporate" is made because you can easily download updates for re-distribution to other users, essentially creating your own comprehensive download center. To find updates, you can search the site by:

  • Operating system
  • Component type (e.g. display drivers, modem drivers, etc.)
  • Date an update was posted to the Web
  • Manufacturer
  • Language

You can use up to three of these criteria to sort the updates, and then choose the number of results you want to see.

Intel "Willamette" to be released as Pentium 4

Pentium 4

Intel announced last month that its new processor, formerly known by its code name "Willamette", will be released as Pentium 4 later this year.

The P7-based Pentium 4 is the first totally new processor core from Intel since the P6-based Pentium Pro was released in October 1995. The Pentium 4 will debut at a speed of 1.4GHz, and interface with a high-speed 400MHz bus, compared with the 100 and 133MHz buses that are typical today.

"Around the world, PC users associate the Pentium brand with the highest PC performance, compatibility and quality available," said Pam Pollace, vice president, Intel Sales and Marketing Group, and director, Worldwide Marketing Operations. "Computer users will be able to instantly recognize the Pentium 4 processor as Intel's newest high-performance microprocessor."
