Microsoft Releases Beta 3 of Windows Me

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

Windows Me

Microsoft Windows Me has reached the long-awaited Beta 3 milestone. Beta 3 adds a number of changes over Beta 2, including Microsoft's new Movie Maker, Windows Media Player 7, USB updates, improved application compatibility, and a number of bug fixes. This will be the last Beta phase before Windows Me hits RTM (Release To Manufacturing), currently scheduled for the first week of June this year.

Windows Me is the successor to Windows 98 / 98 SE, and should be the last OS based on the 9.x kernel. As such, Me will not be a complete new OS, it looks like Windows 2000, but then running on the older 9.x kernel.

Windows Me will disappoint most people when they realize there's only a few new features. But this has never been Microsoft's goal with Windows Me, it's primary goal being to improve reliability and workability. The biggest features continue to be what Microsoft calls PC Health, which include System File Protection, System Restore, and the Help Center.

I wrote up a small review of Windows Me Beta 2, where you can find some information and screenshots.
