 Microsoft Delays Outlook Security Patch

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

Microsoft originally announced the Outlook Security Update two weeks ago promising a release in the week of May 22. At the end of that week, Microsoft announced a delay in the release, saying that the update would be available this week (rumours are later today.... we'll see). The reason for the delay is to add modifications to the update, allowing the inclusion of server-based tools for those using server-based mail. This will give administrators the possibility of making different configurations depending on a user's profile.

So far, the promised update has failed to appear on the Office Update Web site, and even if it appears, I would caution Outlook users about installing this update, as it will limit Outlook functionality and also have an impact on 3rd party products. Microsoft has made a sketchy document available about this impact, which I suggest you read before implementing the Patch - if it arrives.

"I thought I'd tip you off to a piece of software that turns your RealAudio player into a real sound system. I'm sitting here clicking the on/off button to hear the difference between the signal and the iQ enhanced version and the difference is not like night and day -- it's like night and several days." -- R.   Newsletter Survey

Last week I asked you to participate in a small survey, to help me determine what your preferences are for the kind of information you want in this Newsletter.

So far over 900 of you have given your opinion, that's around 5% of our readers. If you didn't fill out the little survey, please browse to the survey page, and participate!

To all who participated: Thanks!

There were not many surprises for me, although I had not expected the number of Outlook users to surpass the Netscape Messenger users! To be honest, I have no idea how this Newsletter looks in Outlook (I use Outlook Express... it suits my needs), so when I have some spare time (yea right!), I'll install a copy to check!

Then I noticed a curious thing, 3 people (so far) rated the Newsletter as being of poor quality. Now that's fine, you have your opinion, but you know that you can unsubscribe right? You have all the information at the bottom of each Newsletter. In case you are wondering, yes, a text-only version is also available! When you unsubscribe from the HTML version, you will receive a confirmation, and this will also contain instructions on how to subscribe to the text version.

There is one more thing I wanted to share with you right now. Some of you send me comments, and asked if it would be possible to receive virus alerts when they happen.

Now we already do that, but not using the Newsletter. We offer commercially-run announcement lists, one of them being the Internet: Viruses list. If you subscribe to that list, we will send you information about virus outbreaks, as soon as we have the information. There is one more thing you need to know: we only send warnings of the more serious virus threats. To subscribe to the Internet: Viruses list, check your e-mail address, and press Sign-up!
