Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,
Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), the successor to Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), is reportedly moving forward at a steady pace in its development. Although there have been some brief delays with Beta 3 of this OS, Microsoft is expected to ship any day now. Microsoft wants to deliver this beta to attendees of its eXtreme technology preview event, to be held in theaters across the United States on April 8.
Although Microsoft has not confirmed a shipping date, it is now rumored to ship on June 6, a delay of one week from the original target date. One of Millennium's core components - Internet Explorer 5.5 - will ship on Windows Me's original ship date, May 26th.
I hope to do a review of a beta version of Windows Me in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also preparing a Service Pack (SP1) for Internet Explorer 5.01. According to a note send to testers: "Our goal is to bundle and deliver external customer QFEs, fixes escalated via support channels, as well as public security fixes that were released after IE 5.01 gold. The bundling of such fixes in this Service Pack release ensures that our users maintain a fast, reliable and robust experience with the lowest ownership cost."
It's not yet known when the Service Pack will be available.
Irok worm spreading globally
Several Anti-Virus vendors are warning computer users about a new e-mail worm that is currently spreading rapidly in several locations around the world. The Irok.Trojan.Worm spreads via e-mail as an electronic chain letter, much like the infamous W97M/Melissa virus did exactly one year ago.
The Irok worm spreads via Microsoft Outlook e-mail and is very widespread right now.
The Irok worm is only a threat to Microsoft Windows users and only spreads further via the Microsoft Outlook e-mail application and Internet Relay Chat (IRC).
