Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,
After a lengthy recess, the Microsoft vs. DOJ trial is set to resume on June 1, when Microsoft will question AOL executive David Colburn. I can't say that I'm extremely interested in the trial, we'll just have to wait and see what the DOJ comes up with. If - by any chance - you are interested in this trial, ZDNet News has an ongoing Microsoft vs. DOJ Special Report, where you can find the latest information, backgrounds & witness lists.
AMD Introduces Highest Performance x86 CPU for Notebook PCs
In last week's newsletter I wrote about the new mobile Intel® Celeron processor, running at 366 MHz. To emphasise that Intel does not hold the speed record for mobile processors, AMD announced this week the arrival of the industry's highest performance x86 mobile PC processor available, the Mobile AMD-K6®-III-P. The new Mobile AMD-K6-III-P processor is based on AMD's advanced sixth generation micro-architecture, with AMD's unique TriLevel Cache design, and a 100 MHz front-side bus (the Intel Celeron's bus runs at 66 MHz). The processor is available immediately at clock speeds of up to 380 MHz.
AMD's TriLevel Cache architecture includes a full-speed 64KByte Level 1 (L1) cache, an internal full processor-speed backside 256KByte Level 2 (L2) cache, and a 100-MHz frontside bus to an optional external Level 3 (L3) cache of up to 1MByte. The TriLevel Cache maximizes overall system performance of Mobile AMD-K6-III-P processor-based notebook PCs by delivering the mobile computer industry's largest combined system cache.
The K6-III-P also supports AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) and offers AMD's 3DNow set of instructions to enhance 3-D graphics performance. Intel will not offer its enhanced instruction set for notebooks until the debut of the mobile Pentium III at 450 MHz in September of this year.
FREE EMERGENCY UNDELETE TOOL FOR WINDOWS NT
Executive Software, the leading supplier of reliable system management tools, has released a freeware version of its Emergency Undelete file recovery tool for Windows NT. Now available for download from www.executive.com, Emergency Undelete is a new tool that recovers accidentally deleted files directly from any NTFS or FAT disk and can even recover files that were deleted prior to its installation. It can eliminate the hours of time spent searching through back-up tapes for vital lost files, and can quickly restore what was previously unrecoverable.
The Recycle Bin captures files that are deleted from Windows NT Explorer only. Files deleted through other programs such as File Manager, from the command line, or from within applications, are not sent to the Recycle Bin. In addition, files that are deleted across a Windows NT network from one computer to another also bypass the Recycle Bin and are permanently deleted. Emergency Undelete is one module of the full Undelete data protection product. The full-featured product provides an enhanced "Recovery Bin" that captures and stores files deleted from all sources, including all files that bypass the Recycle Bin. The full version is the only product with enhanced "Recovery Bins" that work across the entire Windows NT network to allow for remote recovery of files.
