Pentium III delays could give AMD the lead
According to a recent article on CNET News, Intel is delaying its "Coppermine" Pentium III chip for two months. This means the chip will not appear until November, and since PC makers typically don't like developing new models in the fourth quarter, it also means that the chip won't appear in many PC's in 1999.
Meanwhile AMD's K7 ("Athlon") just launched, and if AMD can actually deliver the new chip in sufficient quantities - it has a history of fumbling product launches and not being able to manufacture high-end chips when they can command premium prices - it could mean that AMD will have several months to market its new product as the industry's top performer.
The chip's innovative design has received rave reviews from analysts, who say it should equal or surpass Pentium III in performance. A 600MHz K7, one source said, will equal a 700MHz Pentium III
Meanwhile it was announced that IBM will be using the K7 chip when it brings out a fancy, high-end Aptiva S consumer PC this summer.
