Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,
This week we started a new series of articles on our Web site, giving you a first look at Microsoft's new OS, which is in the last stages of beta testing. Windows 2000 is expected to move to RC1 (Release Candidate 1) by the end of this month, and Microsoft is quietly optimistic that it will be shipped by October of this year.
Eric Bursley will take a look at the latest beta - the beta 3 - and write a series of articles detailing his experiences with this new product. You can read his first article on the Web site now.
Eric also manages the Windows NT Forum on our Support BBS.
Microsoft Goofed with Office 2000 Product Key
Microsoft is betting heavily on the success of Office 2000. One would have thought they would be a little more careful when releasing another new product. Apparently nobody thought it necessary to test the Product Key that is provided with the CD-ROM.
The Product Key provided to customers with the Microsoft Office 2000 CD-ROM Disk 2 Setup is incorrect. There is a Software and Product Key incompatibility problem.
When you attempt to run Microsoft Publisher 2000 Setup from the Microsoft Office CD-ROM Disk 2, you may receive the following message:
Setup failed to locate a valid qualifying product on your machine.
Please select the drive where a qualifying product can be found.
No matter what drive you select, Setup does not find a qualifying product, and you receive the following error:
Error 1608. Could not find any previously installed compliant products on the machine for installing this product.
When you click OK, you will receive the following message:
Setup ended prematurely because of an error.
To correct this problem, you have to contact Microsoft Publisher Customer Support at the following telephone number to receive a valid Product Key:
(425) 635-7140
If you are outside the United States, you can find the appropriate support numbers for Microsoft Publisher support from Office 2000 Help:
From the Help menu in any Microsoft Office 2000 application, click About...
Click Tech Support
Select the help topic Learn more about support outside the United States and Canada.
