 Windows 2000 Professional: First Look

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

This week we started a new series of articles on our Web site, giving you a first look at Microsoft's new OS, which is in the last stages of beta testing. Windows 2000 is expected to move to RC1 (Release Candidate 1) by the end of this month, and Microsoft is quietly optimistic that it will be shipped by October of this year.

Eric Bursley will take a look at the latest beta - the beta 3 - and write a series of articles detailing his experiences with this new product. You can read his first article on the Web site now.

Eric also manages the Windows NT Forum on our Support BBS.

Microsoft Goofed with Office 2000 Product Key

Microsoft is betting heavily on the success of Office 2000. One would have thought they would be a little more careful when releasing another new product. Apparently nobody thought it necessary to test the Product Key that is provided with the CD-ROM.

The Product Key provided to customers with the Microsoft Office 2000 CD-ROM Disk 2 Setup is incorrect. There is a Software and Product Key incompatibility problem.

When you attempt to run Microsoft Publisher 2000 Setup from the Microsoft Office CD-ROM Disk 2, you may receive the following message:

Setup failed to locate a valid qualifying product on your machine.
Please select the drive where a qualifying product can be found.

No matter what drive you select, Setup does not find a qualifying product, and you receive the following error:

Error 1608. Could not find any previously installed compliant products on the machine for installing this product.

When you click OK, you will receive the following message:

Setup ended prematurely because of an error.

To correct this problem, you have to contact Microsoft Publisher Customer Support at the following telephone number to receive a valid Product Key:

(425) 635-7140

If you are outside the United States, you can find the appropriate support numbers for Microsoft Publisher support from Office 2000 Help:

  1. From the Help menu in any Microsoft Office 2000 application, click About...

  2. Click Tech Support

  3. Select the help topic Learn more about support outside the United States and Canada.

Workaround Available for "Malformed HTR Request" Vulnerability

Microsoft has released a workaround that eliminates a vulnerability in Microsoft® Internet Information Server 4.0. The vulnerability could allow denial of service attacks against an IIS server or, under certain conditions, allow arbitrary code to be run on the server.

A patch to eliminate this vulnerability is being developed.

Affected Software Versions:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0

Issue

IIS supports several file types that require server-side processing. When a web site visitor requests a file of one of these types, an appropriate filter DLL processes it. A vulnerability exists in ISM.DLL, the filter DLL that processes .HTR files. HTR files enable remote administration of user passwords.

The vulnerability involves an unchecked buffer in ISM.DLL. This poses two threats to safe operation. The first threat is a denial of service. A malformed request for an .HTR file could overflow the buffer, causing IIS to crash. The server would not need to be rebooted, but IIS would need to be restarted. The second threat would be more difficult to exploit. A carefully constructed file request could cause arbitrary code to execute on the server via a classic buffer overrun technique. Neither scenario could occur accidentally. This vulnerability does not involve the functionality of the password administration features of .HTR files.

Workaround

Microsoft highly recommends that customers disable the script mapping for .HTR files as follows:

  1. From the desktop, start the Internet Service Manager by selecting Start > Programs > Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack > Microsoft Internet Information Server > Internet Service Manager

  2. Double-click Internet Information Server

  3. Right-click on the computer name and select Properties

  4. In the Master Properties drop-down box, select WWW Service, then click the Edit button

  5. Click the Home Directory tab, then click the Configuration button

  6. Highlight the line in the extension mappings that contains .HTR, then click the Remove button.

  7. Respond yes to Remove selected script mapping? say yes, click OK 3 times, close ISM

Microsoft recommends that customers also review the IIS Security Checklist.
