Microsoft Releases Office 2000

Microsoft Corp. President Steve Ballmer launched the Office 2000 application suite at a presentation in San Francisco on Monday June 7.

The latest in the line of Office Suites is designed to translate documents between traditional office formats and HTML, with a simple "Save as" procedure, a welcome addition for people developing/publishing on Intranets or Extranets.

Another new feature is called Collaboration. This feature uses Internet Explorer 5's Web Folders that makes files and folders on a Web server look like regular files or folders on a local hard disk or network drive. You can access and publish files to Web Folders directly from Office's File Open and Save dialog boxes, and you can even copy, move, rename or delete files between Web folders and a local disk. To use Web Folders, your server must have either FrontPage extensions or the included Office Server Extensions.

Microsoft announced that the ISP's Verio Inc. and Concentric Corp. will be the first to start hosting the Office Server Extensions, more ISP's and VAR's are expected to join this program.

The various office versions consist of:
Standard: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
Small Business: Word, Excell, Outlook, Publisher, Small Biz tools
Professional: Everything in Standard + Small Business + Access
Premium: Everything in Professional + FrotPage + PhotoDraw
Developer: Everything in Premium + tools and database runtimes

As noted in last week's Newsletter, Microsoft has a handy Office 2000 Upgrade Tool, which lets you check to see if you are eligible for the upgrade version.

TweakDUN chosen as The Microsoft & WUGNET Best Choice Shareware
Pick of the Week for Windows 95/98

Each week Microsoft® and WUGNET® feature a shareware pick demonstrating the highest standards available today in shareware for Windows 95/98. This week that honor goes to TweakDUN.

As many of you already know, our highly acclaimed utility, TweakDUN, is the software that put InfiniSource on the map. We released TweakDUN in July of 1997 after our MaxMTU page became the most popular page on our site. Today, almost two years later, it still remains the most visited page at InfiniSource, linked from thousands of sites on the Internet.

Over the past two years, TweakDUN has received many, many top Internet awards, including 5 stars at all the top shareware sites like ZDNet, SoftSeek, Tucows, Winfiles, etc... The special inclusion of TweakDUN in the venerable Stroud's Critical Winsock Apps listing, right after Microsoft DUN 1.3, really solidified TweakDUN's place in history. Now the crowning accolade has been bestowed on TweakDUN... inclusion in the Microsoft Windows 95/98 Users Group Shareware Hall of Fame. Only a very few software applications ever receive this top endorsement from Microsoft. Now both DU Meter and TweakDUN have been honored with this supreme accolade.

If you haven't yet tried these two utilities, you might want to do so. They are some of the top shareware programs available on the Internet.

You can download [440KB] the shareware version of TweakDUN from Microsoft's server.
