Microsoft Releases Office 2000 Microsoft Corp. President Steve Ballmer launched the Office 2000 application suite at a presentation in San Francisco on Monday June 7. The latest in the line of Office Suites is designed to translate documents between traditional office formats and HTML, with a simple "Save as" procedure, a welcome addition for people developing/publishing on Intranets or Extranets. Another new feature is called Collaboration. This feature uses Internet Explorer 5's Web Folders that makes files and folders on a Web server look like regular files or folders on a local hard disk or network drive. You can access and publish files to Web Folders directly from Office's File Open and Save dialog boxes, and you can even copy, move, rename or delete files between Web folders and a local disk. To use Web Folders, your server must have either FrontPage extensions or the included Office Server Extensions. Microsoft announced that the ISP's Verio Inc. and Concentric Corp. will be the first to start hosting the Office Server Extensions, more ISP's and VAR's are expected to join this program.
