 Y2K Viruses Appear

by Arie Slob

Dear Windows-Help.NET Subscriber,

In the past week the first Y2K related viruses started to appear. These viruses are Y2K related because they disguise themselves as a Y2K fix, or they trigger events when the computer is first booted after the January 1 2000 date, thus giving users the impression that whatever happens is the result of the so called Y2K bug, instead of a virus.

Experts think that the number of viruses to be released before the end of this year will reach between 500 - 1000.

There are a few things you can do to protect yourself. To begin with, stop opening files attached to emails, even (because of the Melissa-like viruses) when that email comes from someone you know!

Make it clear to your friends, and if you really need to share documents or other files, send an advanced notice from what you are going to send them next.

To help you combat the onslaught of viruses, Microsoft and leading anti-virus firms are providing free 90-day trial versions of anti-virus software to consumers preparing for the year 2000. The software can be found on Microsoft's Year 2000 Web site through December 31.

If you are a resident of the USA or CAN, we have another incredible offer for you: Norton AntiVirus 2000 for FREE (after rebates) - offer expires December 31, 1999. This offer is available, along with quite a few other free-after-rebate offers, from our Freebate Center.

ShieldsUP! Test Your Security

Gibson Research's ShieldsUP! site tests your system for security from your browser. Simply clicking a button at the site causes it to benignly test your machine for common configuration faults that could open your machine to attack. It then gives you a full report on your machine's security. But best of all, it gives you all the information you need to secure your machine, with no-cost configuration options or with aftermarket hardware and software security products, with reviews of four commercial (personal) firewall packages.

Then you can continue to the Fortify Web site to test your browsers SSL Encryption level. Don't let the title fool you (Fortify for Netscape), it works perfect for Microsoft browsers too.
